Amsterdam Cafes
Amsterdam has a long cafe tradition. Although in recent years Grand Cafes have begun to sprout up around the city, the preferred meeting point still seems to be one of the city's 1400 Brown Cafes. These friendly spots do not work to be trendy, nor do they offer entertainment, or lavish decor. Brown cafes exist solely to provide their patrons with the opportunity to enjoy a beverage in the company of neighbors, friends and newcomers; and have been doing so in Amsterdam since the 13th century. Although each cafe is individual, reflecting the character of its own neighborhood, there are certain characteristics common to all: dark, aged walls, historical paraphernalia, and the lively chatter of the clientele. Some have said that a visit to a Brown Cafe is a distinctively Dutch experience, while others feel the places share a certain kinship with British pubs. Either way, you'll not want to miss the opportunity of experiencing "gezelligheid" (coziness and conviviality) for yourself.
