Amsterdam Restaurants
Amsterdam, while not known for its cuisine, offers a fine selection of restaurants, cafes and eetcafes (pubs that also serve meals). You will find examples of Spanish, Mexican, Italian, Thai, Indian, Turkish and Chinese delicacies, although most have been adapted to the Dutch palate. A typical
Dutch meal consists of meat, potatoes and large portions of vegetables. Since meat is expensive, don't expect large steaks or other cuts. Few restaurants offer only Dutch cuisine, so you should be able to find something to suit you nearly anywhere. Vegetarian plates are widely available as well.
Dinner is the main meal of the day and most restaurants are full by 7:00. Keep in mind that the locals eat early and most kitchens are closed by 10:00. Lunch is generally light - sandwiches and salads. The grand cafes are a great place for a leisurely lunch.
You may want to check out Vooges, De Witte Uyl or De Silveren Spiegel for local flavors, Auberge de Hoefslag for seafood or L'Angoletto for Italian. If you prefer oriental there's the Thai Snack Bar Bird or Oriental City for Chinese.
