Amsterdam's Grand Cafes
While people have been frequenting Amsterdam's brown cafes for centuries, a new tradition has established itself over the past two decades or so. Grand cafes are distinct from the traditional "bruine cafes" in size, decor and ambience. Unlike its darker, aged counterpart, a grand cafe is larger, brighter and trendier. Yes, you can order a cup of coffee or a Dutch beer here, but you will also find a broader menu, frequent entertainment (live music and occasional shows) and beautiful views of the outside world. Some grand cafes even have sun lounges overlooking the Amstel River. While card games are an option here (they are the rule in brown cafes), you will also find a reading table with local and international newspapers as well as magazines. You will also find plenty of natural light to allow you to read. So should you need to escape Amsterdam's frequently inclement weather, take advantage of the moment and acquaint yourself with a grand cafe.
