Dutch Cuisine
Restaurants in Amsterdam offer a lot more variety than they did just a few short years ago, but while you are visiting, be sure to check out some of the traditional Dutch favorites. Here are a few spots that feature Dutch Cuisine.
One of the most popular restaurants in the city is D'Vijff Vlieghen (The "Five Flies"); so named because it occupies 5 adjoining canal houses. Reservations would be wise. Tour groups, local businessmen and celebrities fill the place day after day. Brass plaques on the chairs list the luminaries who have occupied them. Portions are large, ingredients are fresh and the menu and wine list are extensive. Highly recommended.
Cheese Fondue is a staple in the Netherlands, especially as a celebratory meal. One of the best places in the city to experience fondue is the Cafe Bern, on Nieuwmarkt. Aside from the communal aspects of fondue, the well-stocked bar makes this a great group experience.
Steak is the main feature on the menu at De Poort, as it has been since 1870. Located in the Die Poert van Cleve Hotel, this is one of the most traditional eating places in the city. Aside from steak, the restaurant is known for a variety of other dishes, including a thick and delicious pea soup.
De Prins is located on the canal belt in a 17th-century canal house. The ambience is typical brown cafe, but the food is far better than you might expect for the modest price. This is a neighborhood place, and attracts a number of young locals which gives it a noisy, exuberant atmosphere. Canal-side, outdoor seating is available during the warmer months.
Haesje Claes may be a bit "touristy", but that is part of the charm that continues to draw busloads night after night. The decor is Old Dutch with generous portions of delftware and pewter. The menu is similarly traditional: pea soup, hutspot (stew) and stampot at reasonably modest prices.
Whether you are thinking about breakfast or any other meal, you may want to consider the Pancake Bakery. Dutch Pancakes are sold all over Amsterdam, but no other place matches this one for the canal-side views, outdoor terrace or selection of over 70 different toppings. From traditional maple syrup to curry or Cajun spices, these will be pancakes that you will never forget. A particularly popular spot for children.
