Jewish Historical Museum Amsterdam
In 1987 the Joods Historisch Museum (Jewish Historical Museum) was opened to the public. Housed in 4 synagogues, not used since World War II, which have been renovated and tied together by a spectacular steel and glass addition, the museum presents a stirring panorama of Jewish life. The museum's permanent collection of 11,000 items tells the history of Jews in Amsterdam from the 1600s to the present and has a number of very nice display articles, such as a Torah Ark and many objects from everyday Jewish life, like seder plates and challah covers.
The synagogues create the perfect venue for explaining the intricacies of Judaism. Aside from reliving the saga of the Jews in Amsterdam, the museum provides information and insight into the Jews and their customs all around the world. Surprising, the museum has very little information on the Holocaust (perhaps leaving that to the Anne Frank House), but there are special exhibitions which continually rotate through the museum.
