Leidseplein Amsterdam
Travelers often get caught up in the rush of their itineraries. Armed with lists of places to see and maps carefully plotted, they leave their hotels to systematically visit the sights and see the city. From time to time, however, it is good to actually become acquainted with the city itself, and not just its buildings and history. Leidseplein is one of the best places in Amsterdam for idling away a little time in a cafe and perusing the Dutch character. This plaza was once a parking lot for the horses and buggies that were not allowed in the city center.
Today it is alive day and night. There is a sense of delight and freedom in the air, and the endless stream of musicians and street performers will help you pass a few hours in a most pleasant fashion. Of course, you can always pass your time here shopping (a number of retail chains are beginning to line the square) or enjoying some fine Dutch cuisine while you are here. The famous old City Opera House on the Leidseplein is the scene of musical happenings nightly.
