Rembrandtplein Amsterdam
Originally designed as a park and square in honor of Rembrandt, the area has grown to be one of the premier shopping, theater and nightlife areas of the city. Like Leidseplein, a similar although larger district, the crowded streets are lined with cafes, bistros, boutiques, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels. At almost any hour of the day or night, this area is busy. In the daytime local artists ply their trade in the park, trying to sell their works to the tourists. It is interesting to watch them work, and they seem unaffected by spectators. As the sun goes down, the restaurants begin to fill. Many people come to Rembrandtplein to go to the cinema - and in this neighborhood that is a special treat. There are several enormous old Art Deco "movie palaces" that have not lost their grandeur. After the feature, head to one of the many local clubs for a drink and dance until closing time.
