Royal Palace Amsterdam
This must be the most amazing city hall in the world. Originally commissioned in the 17th century to replace the decaying Gothic Town Hall, which subsequently burned down, Jacob van Campen designed the new building to be representative of the prosperity and power of Amsterdam. Somewhat pretentious (the maps on the floor of the entry way show Amsterdam as the center of the earth, surrounded by the gods) the building is a work of art. Marble inlaid floors, magnificent sculptures in the main chambers, and carved stone in nearly every corner adorn the building. In 1808, when Napoleon's younger brother was named king of the Netherlands it officially became a palace and continues to serve as one until this day; although it has been relegated to use as a service for the tourism industry and an occasional state reception of official ceremony.
There is an excellent video presentation given throughout the day that highlights the history, architecture and artistry of the building.
