Tropenmuseum
The Dutch are well-known for their traditions of seafaring and colonization. With holdings throughout the world, they became quite knowledgeable of life and customs in far away lands. The Tropenmuseum (Tropical Museum) is a testament to that knowledge. Officially operated by the Royal Institute for the Tropics, the museum is housed in a magnificent building which features stunning elements of Dutch design.
The galleries and exhibition halls within the building serve as the venue for an interactive journey to other countries and cultures. Hear musical instruments from around the world. Walk through the slums of Manila or the rainforests of Peru. Holograms, computer animation, objects and multimedia presentations provide fascinating information, but the most interesting parts of the Tropenmuseum are the are the walk-through areas, which give the sensation of actually being at the various locations. This is a large museum, and you will find yourself lingering longer than you intended to. Plan at least a day for the Tropenmuseum.
