Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam
This museum is exactly what the name advertises: a collection of the works of Vincent Van Gogh, from his earliest artistic attempts to the final "Wheatfield with Crows" completed two days before the artist committed suicide. This is a fascinating gallery in that it allows you the opportunity to carefully study the development of one artist. Each of Van Gogh's distinct periods can easily be seen, as can the influences which provided the inspiration for each subsequent period. Many believe that the works of the final phase of his life also reveal the artist's maddening inner pain. These two hundred paintings represent only 10 years of artistic effort, and it is plainly evident that the artist was just beginning to realize his brilliance at the end of his brief career.
Audio tours are available and computer screens throughout the galleries serve as information points. In addition to the paintings, nearly 500 sketches, drawings and pieces of personal correspondence are also on display.
