Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam
The Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum) tells the story of Amsterdam's five years (1940-5) under Nazi occupation during World War II, regarded as the most momentous period in 20th-century Dutch history. Among the events it highlights are the 1941 February Strike against deportation of the city's Jewish population, and the terrible `Hunger Winter' of 1944-5, as well as the minutiae of underground activities: illegal newspapers, espionage, sabotage and assassination.
Using authentic objects as well as various media and modern technology, the Dutch Resistance Museum evokes a powerful image of the time. Much of the detail of the period is recounted through the eyes of individuals, rather than society as a whole. Letters, photographs, film and audio clips allow visitors to understand some of the personal stories of the resistance. This personal approach is impacting, and creates a spirit of reflection. The museums permanent exhibition is bilingual, so English-speaking visitors will be able to take full advantage of the museum.
